CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES AND POLICY INFLUENCE
- 2018 – I participated in the Tri-national trade and enforcement training workshop to support the legal and sustainable trade in turtles/tortoises. 24-26 October 2018, Miami Florida. The goal of this workshop sponsored by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation was to explore the possibility developing a sustainable commercial trade for sensitive turtle species in North America. This undertaking was part of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) exploring potential trade of natural resources.
- 2010 - 2011 - I was the lead Scientist developing a Natural Resource Damage Assessment initiative for Diamondback Terrapins for the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. My expertise was sought because previous experience with oil spills and my knowledge of terrapins. BP declined to fund the work.
- 2010 - Because of my success and expertise in terrapin conservation I was invited to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Workshop on the Trade and Conservation of Turtles to help develop a national strategy for the successful management of turtle populations throughout the range. I was one of a handful of scientists invited to participate and present at this meeting.
- 2007 - I testified before the Maryland General Assembly and my population data was instrumental in providing solid scientific evidence that led to passing the bill that permanently closed Maryland's commercial terrapin harvest. My analysis of the Patuxent River terrapin population and the trend of this declining population demonstrated that commercial harvest of terrapins was unsustainable.
- 2006 - Based on the population data I collected for the Patuxent River Terrapin population wherein I demonstrated a decline in terrapin population size and a vulnerability to adult mortality, MD-DNR adopted a regulation that established a slot-limit for the commercial harvest of Diamondback Terrapins. The goal of my initiative was to close the fishery but ended in a political compromise to protect larger size classes of adult females that would otherwise have remained vulnerable.
- 1999 - Based on the results published in Roosenburg and Green (2000) the MD-DNR passed a regulation that required a Bycatch Reduction Device (BRD) in the recreational crab pot fishery. I worked with resources managers in Maryland to revise the regulations and develop scientifically-based arguments used in public hearings to justify the regulatory changes.
- 1992 - Based on results published in Roosenburg (1991) MD-DNR adopted regulations that closed the commercial harvest of Diamondback Terrapins during the nesting season. My data indicated that concentrated trapping effort near nesting areas could rapidly and dramatically reduced local population size through reduction of brood stock.
